Dictionary Arabic-English Lexicon by Edward William Lane (d. 1876)

Entry وثق

1 وَثُقَ It was, or became, firm, stable, fast, or strong; (Msb;) i. q. أُحْكِمَ (S, Mgh, K) [or اِسْتَحْكَمَ, q. v.].

وَثِقَ بِهِ He trusted, or confided, in him. (S, Mgh, Msb, K.) 4 أَوْثَقَهُ He made it firm, stable, fast, or strong. (Msb.)

He bound, or tied, him, or it, firmly, fast, or strongly, in a bond. (S, K, TK.) See شَدَّهُ.

5 تَوَثَّقَتِ العُقْدَةُ [The knot became firm, or fast]. (A, in art. ارب.) 10 اِسْتَوْثَقَ مِنْهُ [He secured himself against him, by a bond or the like, or absolutely:] he took, or received, a bond (وَثِيقَة) from him. (S, K.)

أُكْتُبُوهُ اسْتِيثَاقًا وَدَفْعًا لِلنِّزَاعِ [Write ye it, (namely, the debt,) for the creditor's self-securing, and for preventing contention]. (Jel, ii. 282.) See اِسْتَظْهَرَ.

اِسْتَوْثَقَ مِنَ البَابِ He closed the door firmly. (MA.)

اِسْتَوْثَقَ مِنْ أُمُورِهِ: see أَعْنَجَ.

اِسْتَوْثَقَ مِنَ المَالِ: see استوثج.

اِسْتَوْثَقَ بِهِ He confided in him. ثِقَةٌ Trusty; trustworthy; honest: applied as an epithet alike to a man and a woman, and to two or more men or women: pl. ثِقَاتٌ. (Msb.)

بِهِ ثِقَتِى In him is my trust, or confidence. (TA.)

لَسْتُ مِنْهُ عَلَى ثِقَةٍ I am not confident, or sure, of it. Occurring in the S, art. ضمر, &c. See an ex. voce شَهْرٌ (last sentence).

أَخُو ثِقَةٍ: see أَخٌ.

أَخَذَ بِالثِّقَةِ: see أَخَذَ, and see my explanation of إِحْتَاطَ. الوَثِيقَةُ فِى الأَمْرِ The doing the thing firmly; and taking the sure method, or way; expl. by إِحْكَامُهُ والأَخْذُ بِالثَِّقَةِ. (TA.)

وَثِيقَةٌ A bond, security, or writing of obligation for the payment of a debt or the like: pl. وَثَائِقُ. Ex., كِتْبَةُ الوَثَائِقِ (Bd, ii. 282,) The mode of writing bonds.

A pledge.

وَثِيقَةٌ i. q. دُرْجَةٌ, q. v. أَخَذَ الأَمْرَ بِالأَوْثَقِ He set about the affair in the surest, or firmest, manner. (TA.) مَوْثِقٌ and ↓ مِيثَاقٌ A compact; a contract; a covenant; an agreement; a league; a treaty; an engagement; a bond; an obligation; a promise. (S, K, &c.) مِيثَاقٌ : see مَوْثِقٌ; and Jel, &c., in ii. 60 and 87. مَوْثُوقٌ بِهِ In whom [and in which] trust, or confidence, is placed. (Mgh.) مُوَثَّقَةُ الخَلْقِ A she-camel rendered firm, strong, or compact, in make. (S.)

E.W. Lane's Arabic-English Lexicon (8 parts, London, 1863-93) is a major Arabic-English dictionary based on 112 sources, mostly medieval ones, along with al-Zabidi's Taj al-Aroos (also included in Lisaan.net). Lane died before he could finish the work, his great-nephew Stanley Lane-Poole finished it, publishing Volumes VI, VII and VIII from 1877–1893 using Lane's incomplete notes. Lane-Pool's work is of lower quality than Lane's. The work of Reinhart Dozy (see below) was meant as a supplement to Lane's work that covers modern Arabic (Lane focused on classical Arabic only). The digital text for the Lexicon was sourced from Tufts University under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 United States License. We used a TXT version created by an internet user named Navid-ul-Islam. Lisaan.net's version of the Lane Lexicon corrects various errors from both the Persues project (such as erroneous transcriptions of the Persian letter ژ) and the TXT version. Lisaan.net's version also provides helpful automatic annotations on the various abbreviations used by Lane.
