Commentaries for 6.116

Al Anam (Cattle) -

6.116 Abbas - Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘Abbâs
(If thou obeyedst) O Muhammad (most of those on earth) i.e. the Meccan leaders who were Abu'l-Ahwas Malik Ibn 'Awf al-Jushami, Budayl Ibn Warqa' al-Khuza'i and Julays Ibn Warqa' al-Khuza'i (they would mislead thee far from Allah's way) in the Sacred Precinct. (They follow naught but an opinion) they pronounce nothing but surmise, (and they do but guess) they lie to the believers when they say to them: that which Allah immolates is better than that which you slaughter with your own knives.
6.116 Asrar - Kashf Al-Asrar
Wert thou to obey most of those in the earth, they would misguide thee from the path of God.
In terms of number, God's delegates are few, but they have weight and gravity. The folk of falsehood are many, but they have no weight or meaning. For a world of metaphor, one iota of reality is enough. For a world of foolishness and falsehood, one breath of the lords of finding is enough.
One swat of the Lion for a world full of carrion-eaters,
one blast of the Trumpet for a hundred thousand Pharaoh-natures! [DS 184]
“O MuḤammad! If you see them in terms of number and manyness, they will throw you into trouble. If you seek to get along with them, they will hold you back from the Real. Obey Our command, and turn away from them. So shout out what thou art commanded, and turn away from the associaters” [15:94].
6.116 Jalal - Al-Jalalayn
If you obey most of those on earth, that is, the disbelievers, they will lead you astray from the way of God, [from] His religion; they follow only supposition, when they dispute with you concerning [the status of] carrion, saying: ‘What God has killed is more worthy of your consumption than what you kill yourselves!’; they are merely guessing, speaking falsehood in this [matter].
6.116 Kashani - Kashani
[If you obey] most of those on earth, those who are in the lower aspect, by leaning towards this world and the world of the soul and nature, they will lead you astray from the way of God, by their adorning of their refined speech for you and their calling of you to [indulge in] what they are involved in; they follow only supposition, since they are veiled from certainty by illusions and imaginations at the station of the soul; they are merely, conjecturing [by replacing] forms with meanings, the Hereafter with this world and estimating [what] the states [will be] at the final return, as well as the essence of the Truth and His attributes, such as the states of the means of livelihood, in addition to their essences and their attributes, falling thereby into idolatrous association and permitting certain things that are forbidden.
6.116-117 Kathir - Ibn Al Kathir
Most People are Misguided
Allah states that most of the people of the earth, are misguided. Allah said in other Ayat,
(And indeed most of the men of old went astray before them.) 37:71 and,
(And most of mankind will not believe even if you eagerly desire it.)12:103 They are misguided, yet they have doubts about their way, and they rely on wishful thinking and delusions.
(They follow nothing but conjecture, and they do nothing but lie.) Thus, they fulfill Allah's decree and decision concerning them,
(It is He Who knows best who strays from His way.) and facilitates that for him,
(And He knows best the rightly guided.) He facilitates that for them, all of them are facilitated for what He created them.
6.116-117 Maududi - Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi - Tafhim al-Qur'an
The right thing for a seeker-after-truth is not to consider what way the majority of the people are following because that is based on guess-work instead of knowledge. Their beliefs, theories, philosophies, principles of life and laws are the result of guess-work and are, therefore, sure to mislead. In contrast to that, the way of life with which Allah is pleased, can only be the Way which Allah Himself has taught. Therefore, the seeker-after-truth should adopt that way and steadfastly follow it, even though he is left alone on it.
