Abbas - Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘Abbâs
(And if they) i.e. the people of the Book (believe in the like of that which you believe) in all the prophets and their Scriptures (then are they right guided) from error by following the religion of Muhammad and Abraham. (But if they turn away) refuse to believe in all the prophets and their Scriptures, (then are they in schism) in conflict with the true religion, (and Allah will suffice thee (for defence) against them) Allah will lift their burden from you, by killing and expelling them. (And He is the Hearer) of what they say, (the Knower) of their punishment.
If they have faith in the like of that in which you have faith, they will have found guidance; but if they turn away, they will have split from you. God will suffice you against them; He is the hearing, the knowing.
“O master of the east and west and messenger to men and jinn! We have placed these tasks in your tracks and commanded the world's folk to follow you. We wrote the Compact of Love for your servitors and brought them under Our gaze. We threw your opponents into the lowland of abasement and feebleness. Whoever opposes you is on the side of the enemies, and whoever serves you is on the side of the friends. When someone wants you, We want him and give him access to Us. When someone turns away, We burn him and throw him down. Whoso obeys the Messenger has obeyed God [4:80].
“O paragon! Do not let your heart be tight because these estranged people have turned away and spoken ill. We will suffice you against their business and We will remove their torment from you. God will suffice you against them.”
And if they, the Jews and the Christians, believe in the like (mithl, ‘the like’ is extra) of what you believe in, then they are truly guided; but if they turn away, from belief in it, then they are clearly in schism, in opposition to you; God will suffice you, O Muhammad (s), against them, and their schisms; He is the Hearer, of their sayings, the Knower, of their circumstances: God sufficed him [with regard to them] by killing Qurayza, expelling Nadīr and exacting the jizya from them.
And if they believe in the like of what you believe in, of the Oneness of God that unites [all], of every religion and dogma, then they are truly guided, an absolute guidance, that is, total guidance; but if they turn away, then they are [clearly in schism], apart from religion and split from guidance, causing trouble for you in it. [God will suffice you against them; He is the Hearer, the Knower.]
(then they are only in opposition. So Allah will suffice you against them) meaning, Allah will aid the believers against them,
وَهُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ
(And He is the Hearer, the Knower). Allah said,
(The Sibghah of Allah). Ad-Dahhak said that Ibn `Abbas commented, "The religion of Allah.'' This Tafsir was also reported of Mujahid, Abu Al-`Aliyah, `Ikrimah, Ibrahim, Al-Hasan, Qatadah, Ad-Dahhak, `Abdullah bin Kathir, `Atiyah Al-`Awfi, Ar-Rabi` bin Anas, As-Suddi and other scholars. The Ayah,
(Allah's Fitrah (i.e. Allah's Islamic Monotheism)) (30:30) directs Muslims to, "Hold to it.''
And if they believe in the like of what you believe in then they are truly guided; but if they turn away then they are clearly in schism; God will suffice you against them; He is the Hearer the Knower. [That is] “If they travel your path and adopt your way they will be honored with what you have been honored with and they will attain what you have attained. If they insist on making a distinction [between the prophets] We will insist on their abasement. Surely We stand by those who serve you O Muḥammad in unity and We will inevitably turn away from those who differ with you and oppose you. Whoever opposes you is on the side of the enemies and whoever serves you is on the side of the friends.” God will suffice you against them. He is the Hearer the Knower: The sufficiency of God is shown to be true kifāyat Allāh mutaḥaqqiqa because the solicitude of God is tied to you li-anna ʿināyat Allāh bi-kum mutaʿalliqa. Whoever acts adversely toward you My helping hands will crush [them] fa-man nābadhakum qaṣamathu ayādī l-nuṣra and whoever opposes you matters of fate will subjugate [them] wa-man khālafakum qaharathu qaḌāyā l-qisma. He is the Hearer of the ongoing conversation whispered between your innermost selves and Us li-munājāti asrārikum maʿnā ʿalā waṣfi al-dawām [He is] the Knower of [the extent to which] you deserve the special favors of kindness and honor from Us bi-stiḥqāqikum minnā khaṣāÌiṣi al-luṬfi wa-l-ikrām.
